In the film, notorious murderer Riddick is betrayed and still left for lifeless on the desolate World and makes use of his instincts to survive. He eventually teams up with mercenaries arriving to seize him to escape from a bigger threat. Leah Pickett in the Chicago Reader calls the film "only a bit fewer dumb and nonsensical than the past films"
